Thank you to City Council and its President, Richard Skorman, for this:
City of Colorado Springs, Colorado Proclamation in honor of PrideFest Weekend, July 13th and 14th 2019.
WHEREAS: Pride Festivals around the country and in Colorado have occurred in remembrance of the Stonewall Riots since the 1970 Christopher Street Liberation Day to remind people about the fundamental human rights denied to LGBT+ populations for so long in our country; and
WHEREAS: The USA officially recognized Pride on May 31, 2016, reading,
“Since our founding, America has advanced on an unending path toward becoming a more perfect Union. This journey, led by forward-thinking individuals who have set their sights on reaching for a brighter tomorrow, has never been easy or smooth. The fight for dignity and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people is reflected in the tireless dedication of advocates and allies who strive to forge a more inclusive society. They have spurred sweeping progress by changing hearts and minds and by demanding equal treatment — under our laws, from our courts, and in our politics. This month, we recognize all they have done to bring us to this point, and we recommit to bending the arc of our Nation toward justice;” and
WHEREAS: the City of Colorado Springs recognizes the fortune the Pikes Peak Region holds by having a diverse community that includes LGBT+ residents; and
WHEREAS: the City of Colorado Springs recognizes the contribution from LGBT+ people to Arts and Culture, Science, and Business to our community both historically and presently; and
WHEREAS: the City of Colorado Springs welcomes people of all sexual orientations and
gender identities; and
WHEREAS: as citizens of Colorado Springs we shall set aside this weekend to celebrate and honor the LGBT+ persons across the Pikes Peak Region and that PrideFest will be used to reflect on the continued struggles LGBT+ persons face locally, nationally, and internationally.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Richard Skorman, President of the Colorado Springs City Council, do hereby proclaim July 13 and 14, 2019 as PRIDEFEST WEEKEND.
